Kickoff Party

VCBW Kickoff: East Van Crusher

Friday, MAY 25

Vancouver Craft Beer Week is back for its ninth annual celebration of craft beer starting May 25, and we’re recalling our East Van roots for this year’s opening night party. Kicking the week off at the Maritime Labour Centre located in the heart of one of Vancouver’s biggest brewery districts, cans from more than twenty breweries will be cracked and crushed to the spectacle of one of our most revered events: Feats of Strength. Vancouver’s brewers have long been known for their ridiculous strength, and for their strength in the ridiculous. Watch brewers, cellarmen/women, barkeeps and plain-ol strong-folk compete in events like push-up competitions, The Growler tearing, keg stacking and so much more in this presentation of Copper & Theory’s Feats of Strength.

Join us for an unorthodox opening night celebration featuring an incredible array of canned beer including the official VCBW 2018 Collaboration Beer, the infamous Grant Lawrence opening the 10-day celebration with the cracking of the first can, live music from Alex Maher and Hebegebe, the Bandidas Food Truck and the glory of Feats of Strength.

Strange Day #41 – La Ducasse

    May 26, 2018
    7pm - 9pm
    [STRANGE DAY #41]

Darling you gotta let me know… Should I stay (home) or should I go?

GO!… Well actually, COME to Strange Fellows Brewing on May 26th and join us and the Impromptu Rock Choir when we will sing The Clash’s Should I Stay or Should I Go. If indecision is bugging you then maybe a glass of Cask Guardian and singing your way through this timeless conundrum will help to point you in the right direction.

Inspired by La Ducasse – a Belgian tradition of community enactment that historically involves a battle of sorts – this month’s Strange Day is all about joining forces (and voices) against the dragon – be it of indecision or singing in public. If you’re feeling shy, but also think that it sounds really fun – trust us – it will be! (and you know you want to!)

The Impromptu Rock Choir is Vancouver’s #instantchoir. Just show up, sing and become a choir!. The melody and harmony parts will be taught AND you do not need to read music or have any singing/musical experience! Beginners to professionals welcome! It’s all fun and low pressure and you do not need to audition or read music. People with all levels of musical experience can join in! Think of it as a group karaoke!

FREE with the purchase of a beer, otherwise by $5 donation to the Food Bank.

The Guitar Cabaret w/ Paul Pigat & Steve Pineo

    May 27, 2018

The ANZA Club, along with Driftwood Brewing, is thrilled to present: The Guitar Cabaret with host Paul Pigat and very special guest, Steve Pineo on Sunday, May 27th

The Guitar Cabaret pairs the internationally-renowned singer songwriter, guitarist, and host, Paul Pigat with a wide range of guitar-slinging guests. Past guests include Shawn Verreault (Wide Mouth Mason) and Paul Rigby (Neko Case, Garth Hudson).

Paul Pigat has a robust and diverse career. Best known as the frontman and blistering guitarist for the rockabilly band Cousin Harley, Pigat also has a wide breadth of projects from jazz to roots to blues, most notably The Paul Pigat Trio and Boxcar Campfire. Paul’s solo guitar performances showcase the entire range of his work and never ceases to amaze and dazzle audiences and fans around the world. However impressive the list of credits he’s compiled over the last few years has been — earned by supporting artists such as Neko Case, Jim Byrnes, Michael Kaeshammer and Carolyn Mark and opening for such acts as the Blind Boys of Alabama and The Stray Cats — it’s when you get to hear Paul on his own that his star really shines.

This month’s guest is Steve Pineo. Steve Pineo is a multifaceted guitarist, singer songwriter. A thirty-year musical veteran, his shows are fast-paced and entertaining, and they take you to unexpected places. The songs Steve has written have been covered by artists such as Paul Brand (Canadian Man) and Prairie Oyster (Too Bad For Me). Steve had five solo CDs and appears on the legendary recordings by the Co Dependants, featuring the late, great Billy Cowall. Steve performs solo, as well an acoustic trio, an electric blues band, a six-piece New Orleans Rhythm and Blues Revue called Trick Bag and a five-piece vintage jazz ensemble called Prohibition Hall. His annual Christmas shows consistently sell out week-long runs and he has toured Alberta with The Heebee Jeebies in his loving tribute to Elvis. Not surprisingly, Steve’s musical influences are vast and include blues, jazz, vintage rock and roll, country and western, soul, gospel and world music.

    The fine print:

    1. We do have a fair bit of seating available, otherwise it’s standing/mingling room. You are not guaranteed a place to sit. Show up early and hope for the best. Or make friends with 2 people sitting at a giant booth.
    2. If you show up later in the evening, there is no guarantee that a beer you wanted to sample will still be available. We had 6 kegs drained by 9:00 PM last year. The solution is to get your butt down here early!
